A major £42 million flood defence scheme has officially opened, providing enhanced protection for homes, businesses and key infrastructure across Tonbridge and Hildenborough. The project combines an expanded Leigh Flood Storage Area with new flood defences in Hildenborough, helping to reduce flood risk for around 1,870 homes and 575 businesses across the Medway catchment.
The scheme increases the capacity of the Leigh Flood Storage Area by approximately 23%, enabling it to store up to 7.4 million cubic metres of floodwater and better protect local communities from the growing impact of severe weather and climate change. Designed to improve resilience for decades to come, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to continue reducing flood risk for at least the next 50 years.
Alongside the expansion at Leigh, new flood defences in Hildenborough include an embankment, pumping station and flood wall, providing additional safeguards for residents and businesses. The investment represents a significant boost for the area’s long-term economic resilience, helping to protect communities, support business continuity and safeguard investment across West Kent.
